Yeah Yeah Noh, the newest additions to the Precious Recordings of London roster, are an ‘unpop group’ formed in Leicester in 1984.

Creators of gold-dust LPs and EPs, three classic John Peel sessions and two more recent sets of Marc Riley session showstoppers. Originators of an entire Mojo genre: ‘Calor Gas psychedelia’. And stars of every Cherry Red C86-era comp released this millennium. Best known for such classics as ‘Cottage Industry’ – in the NME indie chart for over a year – and Festive 50 smash ‘Bias Binding’, they were stalwarts of Manchester’s influential In Tape label. They even spawned a festival at the ICA: ‘John Peel Is Putting the Fun Back into Being Pretentious’ … echoing a lyric from ‘Bias Binding’.

But YYN soon shifted to a more psychedelic sound, as evidenced on the acclaimed ‘Cutting the Heavenly Lawn of Greatness’ LP. Now they are back with their first new material since 2015.

The Big Thumb EP offers not only a trip inside the full-frontal lobe of singer Derek Hammond; not only a shock of melody, noise, audacious wit and thievery musicologically referential impressionistic disorientation – but also a glimpse into the future. 2025 saw the start of an unprecedented burst of activity following the addition of one-time Nightingale and Nick Drake Weekend regular Andy Lloyd. He can play guitar just like a-ringin’ a bell – except with more effects pedals, and 27 times louder.

One review of the new line-up’s debut at Preston Popfest was as short as it was sweet: “Amazing.”
