The spam-filter bothering Swedes swap the Alt-Right conspiracy pipeline for contemplative introspection of the algorithmic modern dystopia, with frontman Sebastian Murphy embracing the existential absurdity and grounded vulnerability of a life lived in the terminally online age.
Like the constant noise of a social media doomscroll, Viagr Aboys is a perpetual stew of bizarre hyperfixations; globalisation, jealousy, ancient bogs, dog’s teeth, ayahuasca cults and little green worms, plus all the tiny dopamine hits that fight for our attention every day at the expense of our sanity, underscored by the Boy’s trademark skronk-punk. This is the Boys at their most eclectic, mixing classic VB filthy basslines and sax-stabs with floatier Benadryl-haze flutes, drifting psychedelia and roiling synths on the stand-out tracks.
It’s not all goblins and gooning, though. What is buried here is genuine heart - a yearning for human connection to relieve
the crushing weight of wasting your days away. The angular guitars give way to Murphy crooning about a love that calms his ADHD-addled brain from drifting, and instead lets him live in the now, enjoying Chinese food and video games with his wife, a sentimental moment that makes life feel easy in a world that demands so much.
