Pop culture icon Steve Strange was a founding father of the whole early 80s New Romantic movement having had a hand in the launch of the landmark clubs of the genre - Billy’s, The Blitz Club and Club For Heroes. The leading light of those pioneering nightclubs concurrently became, arguably, the most famous poster boy of the new wave synth-pop genre as the lead vocalist of Visage.
Towards the end of a flamboyant life in which he continued to dabble in both club promotion and music, including two further incarnations of Visage, Steve Strange was working on a number of new songs with co-writer Steve Barnacle, himself a member of several previous formations of Visage! Four of the songs here were included in alternative versions on later Visage records ('Seven Deadly Sins', 'Breathe Life', 'Welcome To The Digital Age' and 'Never Stop Dreaming'), but all of the songs on this all-new release are the versions intended for a planned solo album project ‘Le Palais De Danse’ which, with the dedication of Steve Barnacle, finally sees the light of day.
Highlights include ‘Insinuate’, a deft diatribe against the intrusive nature of the press, a sexy duet with Samantha Fox, ‘Dirty & Flirty’, and an oblique synth-pop tribute to Bowie in the title track alongside the gloriously sensuous out-and-out gay anthem ‘Boys’ (which was somewhat unusual for an avowed bisexual, Steve Strange).
