‘With Love’ is the new record from London’s premiere neo-jazz wrecking crew Sly & The Family Drone.
Recorded in December and originally intended for release on Valentine’s Day – With Love is the sound of the band moving quickly and organically, playing together in the room.
"Here she comes now, galumphing through the boiling summer sun like a gargantuan anteater ready to hoover the flesh from anyone stupid enough to chainsaw their mulch. All this hoot and screech is wrapped in a fug of blistered and churning noise, tempered with pristine flecks of machine drool dangling in the firmament, with a side order of percussive burps. I mean this VOID is pretty nice when you, like, really get into it?
BUT. Is this love? Is THIS love? IS THIS LOVE? All this gout and pain? On this evidence Sly def ain’t delivering the Luther Vandross smoochfest promised by With Love’s choccies-and-bubbly presentation (along with custom-made pink satin pillow, nice one lads). Fortunately I’ve wrapped my lobes around the first few tracks of this oncoming monster and, on this early doors snifter, I can reassure y’all that there’s more here than regret-wracked grumble and breakup churn. So yeah, worry not my apprentice cos we’re soon gliding in the current of a bobbing electronic pulse and, OI OI, them double drummers we dig so much in the Sly sound are back while a sinuous horn honks its chemtrails thru the grey sky. BIG VEX.
Apparently, these cuts were nailed down after a busy year of gigging and there’s a palpable feel of fresh gnarl here, a citric swipe through the fug that’s a swerve from the gimlet side-eye of last winter’s Moon Is Doom Backwards. And if you’ve seen these cats live, you’ll know there’s always a pivot, a DROP BABY where the rhythm section swaps its toms for snares and cymbals, someone starts yodelling and SHIT GETS REAL. And right enough, just after the halfway point it all kicks off in some proper Archangels Thunderbird shit. YES, a thousand times. YES.
Now I understand. This is the love. THIS IS the love. That murky abandon of being in the pit when everyone around u is losing their shit. That interpersonal, communal connection that reminds you how, despite whatever else is going on, we are all HERE on a little ball surrounded by gas in a vacuum. Humans, trees, cats, sea urchins, soil, whatever. Even WASPS. That’s proper love, pal.
Maybe the best way to describe the third cut is PORTAL MUSIC, the kind of gravy that hits when you’ve frazzled ur lobes or had so much caffeine that everything moves so fast it’s slow. GOT ANY CHODDIES M8? This is a synaesthetic wire wool drizzle where the TRUE REAL stares at you through its pastel-coloured shell, that eternal and beautiful gurn an ever-increasing temptation to just drop everything and head on in and down.
I HEART YOU. YOU HEART ME. WE ALL HEART SLY AND THE FAMILY DRONE". – Paul Margree, 2026
