Celebrating 4 decades of redefining the alt-rock blueprint, these groundbreaking Bostonians have revisited the seminal Bossanova, expanding it with an exclusive black 7” bonus single including the songs, ‘Dig For Fire’ (a Steve Albini recording!) and ‘Go Man Go’.
It bristles with a ferocious punk spirit that’s unafraid to subvert expectations and whip out an infectious pop chorus just when you think it’s going to take you down into the depths, and the Dinked package also includes an exclusive replica of the 16-page, original UK 10” booklet (featuring incorrect track listing).
Bossanova is the third Pixies album. The band continued to work with Gil Norton after collaborating to such success on their platinum-selling second album Doolittle. Their third album in as many years, 1990 was a particularly fertile time for the band with Kim Deal also having success with The Breeders, who released their debut album Pod just a few months prior.
Featuring the singles, ‘Allison’ (a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison), ‘Dig For Fire’ and ‘Velouria’, plus the first cover to feature on one of their albums, ‘Cecilia Ann’ (originally by The Surftones), Bossanova showed a less primal side to the band, with surf and space rock rising to the fore.
Lyrically, Black Francis is even more cryptic with a recurring sci-fi theme running throughout, which in turn influenced Vaughan Oliver’s classic planet design for the sleeve
More info:
Side A of the Bossanova Dinked International 7” is a Steve Albini recording of ‘Dig For Fire’ recorded in late 1987 during the sessions for Surfer Rosa, and sounding far removed from the version they released almost 3 years later.
Side B is ‘Go Man Go’, a once near-mythical Black Francis and Kim Deal co-write that was recorded by both Pixies and The Breeders during the album sessions for Bossanova and Last Splash respectively but failed to make the cut for either.
Outside of appearing on a bootleg tape of Breeders demos and them airing it a few times live at the time, the song faded from view until 2023 when, upon discovering the lost master for it, The Breeders included their version on their 30th anniversary reissue of Last Splash.
