Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, the group later to be known across the world as Lynyrd Skynyrd originally came together as ‘My Backyard’ in 1964 and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and Bob Burns (drums).
Spending five years touring small venues under various guises and with several line-up changes, they settled on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. By 1970, Skynyrd had become a top band in Jacksonville, headlining some local concerts and opening for several national acts.
The band continued to perform throughout the South in the early 1970s, further developing their hard-driving blues rock sound and image, and experimenting with recording their sound in studios around the South.
