For two brief years at the dawn of the 1980s, Josef K provided iconic Scots indie label Postcard Records with its sharpest cutting edge songs. Although outlived - and outsold - by label-mates Orange Juice and Aztec Camera, Josef K perfected a prescient blend of skinny funk, post-punk and leftfield pop, an artful combination of style and substance that continues to exert an influence out of all proportion to the brevity of their career.
Inspired by punk and American bands such as Television, Pere Ubu and The Velvet Underground, Josef K hailed from Edinburgh and featured singer Paul Haig, guitarist Malcolm Ross and drummer Ron Torrance with David Weddell on bass. Their profound influence has been acknowledged by the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian, Propaganda's Paul Morley, The Smiths, James, Nouvelle Vague and the C86 generation of indie bands.
This is their definitive retrospective.
