Inspired by a steady diet of Blaze Foley, Big Thief, Neil Young, and Jessica Pratt, the Leeds lads approached their second full-length with the heady strains of Americana and emotional folk billowing in their minds.
Add in the rich vocal talents of Celeste, anaiis, Matt Maltese, Rosie Lowe, Olive Jones, Pip Millett, and Sofia and the Antoinettes and the resulting Somewhere Between sounds like it’s floating in on a breeze that’s blown all the way from 1970s Laurel Canyon, picking up a little neo-soul and sun-warmed production along the way.
3 years after their critically acclaimed album, ‘On The Inside’, Gotts Street Park come back with ‘Somewhere Between’, featuring Celeste, Matt Maltese, Rosie Lowe, Pip Millett, Sofia and the Antoinettes, anaiis and Olive Jones.
A departure from their previous work, the new record draws on richly emotional folk and Americana, with Blaze Foley, Jessica Pratt and Big Thief on heavy rotation around the time of its recording. The result combines their production prowess with even greater warmth than before, as they draw on classic songwriting alongside an exceptional roster of guest vocalists.
They channelled their analogue values into the modern Americana style of the record. There was no big conversation about their new direction, but they were all listening to that type of music, with Josh mainlining Neil Young and other “early ’70s stuff” too.
For Somewhere Between, they got together in a room with their featured vocalists and created magic, as the singers conjured their own lyrics after tuning into the trio’s music. “Writing with GSP is always a pleasurable experience,” says Rosie Lowe. “The music is so emotive that songs seem to flow with ease.”
