In the late 70s, the Jamaican music industry was transformed by the introduction of the 12” single; a format that not only allowed for a longer playing time, but also provided a superior audio experience, with a greater dynamic range. Of those Kingston-based producers who had sufficient funds to regularly release records on the format, none were more prolific than Joe Gibbs, whose output between 1978 and 1984 included a raft of ‘disco-mix’ singles. While many of these discs coupled vocal versions with DJ cuts on the same rhythm, a number featured dub versions of the ‘top-side’, and it is the very best of these tracks that feature on this celebration of top-quality extended dub mixes from the Joe Gibbs studio. Mixed by Errol Thompson, a sound engineer of consummate talent, the quality of the recordings is of the highest order, with highlights including exceptional dub workings of numerous roots and dancehall classics, such as ‘Ain’t That Loving You’, ‘Money In My Pocket’, ‘Let Me Love You’ and ‘Boxing Around’. With most of the recordings unavailable on any format since their original vinyl release, the collection is an essential acquisition for connoisseurs of superior dub sounds and all those that appreciate the best that classic reggae has to offer.
