Gil Evans began recording his own albums during 1958-59 thanks to the success of his first collaboration with Miles Davis, Miles Ahead, in 1957.
Out of the Cool was recorded a short time after Evans completed a six-week job at the Jazz Gallery club in New York City; the personnel was largely the same he had used there (including such stars as Jimmy Knepper, Budd Johnson, Johnny Coles and Ron Carter), with the addition of Elvin Jones.
