"Lost Hotel was the first record that truly felt like my record. Before this, I was still figuring out who I was as an artist. I wanted people to know I could write songs that meant something- not just sing them. This was the album where I stopped chasing what I thought music was supposed to sound like and started writing about my own life. Looking back, that's probably why these songs have lasted. They came from an honest place. We made this record over the course of three years because that's all I could afford. I'd save up enough money to go into the studio and cut four or five songs, then go back to work until I could do it again.
We repeated that process over and over, which is why there were so many songs left behind. Those recordings captured a season of discovery, and for the first time, you get to hear that part of the story too. Twenty years later, I still hear pieces of myself in every one of these songs. Lost Hotel gave me confidence. It gave me direction. And it changed my career. I don't know if any album will ever mean more to me than this one.
