Björns vänner were formed sometime at the end of the last century and have since then, at long intervals, released three or four records—depending on how you count.
With their melodic, indie-tinged pop rock—anchored by Richard Schicke’s lyrics, at once direct yet poetic, humorous yet deeply affecting—they have gathered an enthusiastic following, claiming a pretty good ratio between “have heard” and “like.”
For some reason, the musical catchword when they began rehearsing for this record was “ghost prog.” They set out to make a collection of songs with a more restrained touch, leaning more into minor keys and mystique. Many of the songs were written around a time of forced separation, and the inability to fully face life’s challenges runs like a red thread through the record. It’s not an entirely new theme for Björns vänner, but in these depictions of self-experienced and self-inflicted life crises, there is—alongside the frustration—now also more hope and forward momentum.
