If you’re no stranger to Resident’s waters, you’ll know that Big Thief stole our hearts a long time ago and we’ve been in no rush to claim them back. If this is the first dip of your toes, let’s just say that, with card-carrying Thief-ists like James and Georgia amongst our ranks, expectations are always sky-high for the latest BT release but, as ever, they overdeliver.
Double Infinity might initially seem slight compared to the sprawling Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You but this is a deeply moving and, at times, jaw-droppingly beautiful follow up to one of our favourite albums of 2022. Entrancing. Compelling. Astonishing. Full of affective arrangements and inventive yet raw lyricism, Double Infinity has slipped straight into our lives like a long-lost friend resurfacing to shoot the shit over a steaming brew.
And, like that familiar interaction, the core trio of Lenker, Meek, and Krivchenia elegantly twirl their atmospheric folk rock together, each track building on what came before, growing in emotional heft and poetic resonance as the supplementary skills from such esteemed players as Laraaji, Hannah Cohen, and June McDoom add even greater depth to these gut-punch compositions. The New Yorkers might only be 10 years into their much-lauded career, but it feels as if they’ve been with us forever.
Stick it on and sink right in.
