The UK Album Charts were first published in the music magazine Record Mirror in July 1956.

It was a top 5 chart, and during the first five or six months of its existence, up to the end of 1956, only fifteen different albums appeared in this chart, with six of them reaching number 1.

Three of these were the soundtracks to the film versions of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals: "Carousel," "Oklahoma!" and "The King and I." Other artists who reached number one included Frank Sinatra, Bill Haley & His Comets, and Elvis Presley. This collection builds upon Acrobat's long-standing catalog, which includes annual "British Hit Parade" compilations and our concurrent "America's Greatest Hits" sets, based on the singles charts in their respective markets.

Further collections will be released in subsequent years.
