golden-dregs-the-uk-gothic
Golden Dregs, The - UK Gothic
The band is The Golden Dregs. The music is UK Gothic.

Reimagining The Golden Dregs as the browning, dusty papers of an 18th century manuscript, UK Gothic sees the band’s indie-rock pastoralism stand newly wrought in post-industrial mysticism, torn in time between Peckham Rye and the Resurrection; the Body of Christ and Kim Kardashian: “UK Gothic reflects on my past, viewed through a gothic lens”, explains band leader and chief songwriter Benjamin Woods, “As in gothic fiction, the characters are vulnerable and the events are unexplained”.

Drawing sustenance from a childhood spent on the rural coastlines of Falmouth, an upbringing as a Quaker, and the romantic visions of William Blake, “the father of gothic artwork and South London’s Original Rockstar” (an image from his Book of Urizen features on the album’s artwork), UK Gothic serves up a collage of fabled urban backwaters and biblical landscapes, where petrol stations, shopping centres, and Lewisham flytips play host to the congregations, Easter Sundays and Holy Wars.

Emotionally tuckered out after the arduous recording of 2025’s ultra-slick Godspeed - and all the work that comes from being dropped by your label and starting a new one in Joy of Life International (an imprint of End of The Road Records) - Woods wasn’t repeating the same mistakes next time round.

Demoing twenty songs on a four-track cassette machine over one Christmas break, the name of the game was speed, and spontaneity, and a whole lot of trust. A testament to their tightness as a band, the entirety of UK Gothic was learnt and tracked live by the band in three days: “What you hear on the record is probably on average the fifth time they’d played the song together.”

The result of all this is a ten-song set that breathes, creaks, and voyages like a trawler at sea. With Ben Woods’ rumbling baritone croon remaining, as ever, the signature, UK Gothic guides us through orchestral piano ballads and euphoric stained-glass rockers, channeling the tactile textures of Fiona Apple, the gravitas of Nick Cave’s Abattoir Blues, with touches of Caroline’s experimental flair (Ben is a former member).

For Fans Of: Nick Cave, Big Thief, Silver Jews/Purple Mountains, The National, Lambchop, Tindersticks
