The album channels present day anger and disillusionment while refusing to lose sight of hope. “It’s millennial meme culture music,” he explains. “The cacophony of what’s going on in my head spiling out into song. Living in the shadow of 80s Thatcherite/Reaganite economic policy, the broken social contract, the unkept promise of a life we were supposed to get if we did our bit.”

A cathartic soundtrack for life in late capitalism, the album draws inspiration from Talking Heads, Sampha, The Smiths, and The Streets. It came together in an unorthodox, nomadic way, across living rooms and borrowed studios in London, Manchester, Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and the Danish countryside. “Like most musicians in London I can’t afford a studio,” says Dave. “So I put a ca l out to see who’d let me crash and write. I ended up in right-wing and left-wing parts of the country - Bristol, Margate, Cardiff, Leicester, Manchester, and the Reform stronghold of Ashfield.”

The record’s collaborative spirit is central to its DNA, featuring contributions from James from Yard Act, Kayus from Young Fathers, Elery from WU LYF, and Lauren Auder. Touring with Yard Act in 2024 also served as a creative catalyst. “A l the music being played on the tour bus opened up avenues for me,” says Dave. “It inspired me to start my radio show The Outlet on Refuge Worldwide, and al of this bled into the music.” Beyond his songwriting, Dave continues to shape UK culture through curation - from Manchester’s Murkage Club to Tonga, the touring party co-founded with Mike Skinner, and his ongoing radio work.

Standout track, ‘Generation Left On Read’, captures millennial disillusionment and the numbing effects of irony-as-coping-mechanism. In contrast, ‘RNA’ is one of the record’s most intimate moments. An unguarded meditation on masculinity, grief and spiritual ambivalence, co-produced by Kiddus with backing vocals from Young Fathers.

For Dave, the record is also a reckoning with his past. “I’ve come to the realisation lately that the church my family attended during the early portion of my life was a cult,” he shares. “It was in the church that I first witnessed abuse of power and physical abuse, and where the idea that white Europeans were superior to other races was first introduced to me.” These experiences shaped his mistrust of institutions, echoing throughout Brut Thoughts, a record that dissects narcissism, personal, political, and digital, and questions how compassion is being eroded in the algorithm age.

The title, Brut Thoughts, draws from Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut movement - an embrace of outsider art and raw, untrained creativity. “Brut” also means both “raw” in French and “unsweetened” in English, reflecting the album’s spirit of unfiltered honesty. It is, quite simply, without exception, the music I wish to hear.

Formed in Bristol UK (where none of them are from yet all of whom are deeply engrained) in 2020, the Tara Clerkin Trio – as it somewhat democratically exists today, despite the singular authority implied by its name – consists of the titular Tara Clerkin, her partner Sunny Joe Paradisos, and Sunny’s brother, Patrick Benjamin. I’ll confess, I don’t know what their respective roles are within the operation and there’s only a very small part of me that cares to learn, as one of my favorite qualities in an objective listening experience is the mystery of who is playing what, which sounds are “authentic” versus synthesized, which chunks are performed “live” in a room together versus meticulously Frankenstein’ed from measure to measure, or how exactly the overall sound is so (seemingly) effortlessly achieved. Though, I suspect, if and when I do witness a live performance by this band at any point, my enjoyment of the music will not be lost in my better understanding of it.

With two extraordinary mini-albums – In Spring (2021) and On The Turning Ground (2023) – making a splash on London’s formidable World of Echo label in wake of their self-titled 2020 debut, this upcoming Somewhere Good LP is, in many ways, the band’s most realised work. In running their usual gauntlet of idiosyncratic (*an overused adjective for which here there is regrettably no sufficient alternative) approaches, Clerkin & co. color in and outside of compositional lines over the course of 40+ celebratory minutes - never wallowing, despite inherently somber subject matters of self-defeat, disease, displacement, restlessness, gentrification - allowing their arrangements and improvisations ample space and time to situate, stretch out, breathe, cross-pollinate, and ultimately take deeper hold on the listener’s imagination – all while somehow sounding more like themselves than ever before.

Of course, there are traceable influences herein, if one felt that such comparisons were necessary to properly examine and enjoy this music (they aren’t)… Being the big dumb American from the small boring town that I am, cornfed on ‘90s alternative radio with the enchantingly exotic sounds of Maxinquaye and Mezzanine emanating from my chunky tube television, I can’t help but to make a blatantly obvious reference to a “Bristol sound”, ie the whole trip-hop trip, the pastoral crooning over the suggestive urban grime of cracked electro/piano treatments, the digitally-yet-primitively reconstructed James Bond soundtrack string-beats, etc. But the Tara Clerkin Trio is so infinitely much more than that. There are elements of avant-pop, modern classical, kraut-folk, audio verité, dare I say indie rock (and not of the beer guzzling, masturbatory fuzz-flex variety but perhaps more like a Trish Keenan-fronted Faust, Adrian Sherwood at the mixing desk of If You’re Feeling Sinister, or – in expanding on our alternate reality – a world in which High Llamas cut a full-length for Warp Records with Andrew Weatherall on coffee duty).

The hazy, unmappable skyline-mirage of droning harmonium, upright bass, peculiarly accentuated wind instruments, acoustic guitar, hushed yet literally mighty keys combine to hypnotizing effect. The band may make underlying nods to jazz, sure, but it’s not appropriation, it’s that they have the actual chops to build it out. Beneath the janky samples and oddball percussive embellishment lies actually great drumming. Beyond the manipulated vocal witchery and woefully reflective plain-spoke moments are Tara’s subtly inspired melodies, sung with what might honestly be the glue to the whole crazy equation. A calming consistency throughout the otherwise unpredictably dynamic, boldly intuitive, uniquely British exploration of this (their own) universe in song. – Ryan Davis (Chicago, February 2026)

RIYL: Movietone, Broadcast, Empress, DJ Shadow.

An instant hit for many sets of Resident ears, the new EP from the Bath-based five-piece takes us into the kind of darkly vivid, cinematic soundscapes that we so love to submerge ourselves in.

Drawn to the darker nuances of human experience, Night Swimming’s evolving sound blurs the lines between dream-pop and indie rock, pairing atmosphere and texture with intimate, emotional honesty. They were in and out of other projects, eventually meeting Thomassen in a band that collapsed around the pandemic. Just before lockdown, and now in their 20s, the three moved in together, and spent their time in isolation launching Hammok as we now know it. While live shows are usually paramount for bands in heavy music, Hammok didn’t have the option to perform in public. They learned how to be a band together by writing and recording, yielding a new sense of adventurousness in their music. “You begin to think sonically, in layers and production, instead of in breakdowns that will make people mosh and go crazy,” Osland explains. On When Does This Place Become Our Scene, their idiosyncratic blend of pop production, the vivacious energy of hardcore, and experimental textures fully blossoms, placing them on the vanguard of forward-thinking punk.

Most of the songs arrived fast in an inspired burst, but the recording was laborious, with Osland calling the production efforts “the hardest thing I’ve done in my life.” Armed with a set of impressive demos and tasked with refining and expanding their sound, Hammok tweaked and explored until they arrived at something that held all their impulses at once — volatile, hook-driven, and dense with detail. They pushed their noise-rock, hardcore and metal foundations into broader, more dynamic territory weaving industrial abrasion, hip-hop pulse, synth textures, and progressive turns into classic punk urgency. It grapples with the strange, disorienting feeling of growing up - amid body dysmorphia, and changing relationships - and gives voice to the quiet terror of your twenties. “A lot of the songs are about these feelings of starting to feel like old news and struggling with being nearly there in the music industry but not quite there,” explains Jocelyn. The album is searingly honest about life as a creative, where momentum is the artist’s responsibility and luck plays an outsized role. Yet it’s also deeply representational of a generation who “were only 24 and 25, when we were feeling chopped – it’s fucked up,” laughs Jack darkly.

Recorded over four weeks in Brighton - with an additional week in London - alongside emerging producer Ellie Mason (Stella Donnelly, Liars), walt disco marked a complete change in process too. Mason wasn’t just chosen for her technical ability, but for her cultural alignment with the band – a collaborator who could push their increasingly intricate vocal harmonies and shared vision. For the first time, walt disco recorded live as a full unit. “We asked ourselves what would happen if we just wrote more to our core tastes, leaned in to what made us love music at our formative ages,” says Jocelyn. The results are diverse but lend themselves to a cohesive inspirational palette: echoes of Smashing Pumpkins, Cocteau Twins, Placebo, MGMT or The Sundays, wrought into a shape unmistakably walt disco’s.

Their rules were simple: heavy guitars, dynamic electronic textures, and emotionally-rich songwriting. In some ways, recapturing just why walt disco formed in the first place. “It’s a certain era and a certain ethos when you first get into music and play guitars loud in your bedroom as though you’ve never heard them before – that’s what we were going for,” says Jack. The album is shaped by such nostalgia, but not trapped in it; employed to support a smart reflection on youth, rather than a blanket recreation for the sake of it. “We’ve stepped back a bit from being ‘we’re the most different band you’ve ever heard’ and now just want to be creative within the confines of what a band is known to be,” adds Jocelyn.

First single ‘Coup de foudre’ captures such newfound clarity perfectly: a raw, immediate rush of 2000s indie dancefloor intensity, which channels the sharp directness of Yeah Yeah Yeahs into today’s concerns. Built around the French phrase for a sudden, electric connection, ‘Coup de foudre’ is a lustful, fast-paced jolt that few walt disco followers - least of all the band themselves - might have seen coming. “It’s fun to have a horny, chaotic song as the first taste,” says Jocelyn. “I knew it would be a hoot.”

What follows is an album that sets out to find comfort - and the occasional bit of gallows humour - amidst the chaos. Opening track ‘My Body Knows When To Run’ observes a situation and a world on fire (“I’ve been busy doing God’s work for him”), its anthemic chorus almost celebratory of uncertainty. Second single ‘Lies’, meanwhile, is more bittersweet, its sparkling guitars masking the unease of a relationship quietly sustained by small deceptions. “Sometimes I’d say ‘I feel fine’ when I didn’t,” Jocelyn admits. “It rarely actually helps.” The song moves non-linearly through doubt, questioning whether our illusion of everyday stability is in fact easier to live with.

On ‘Don’t Do This Alone,’ walt disco shift into cinematic territory. Modular synths and swelling choral arrangements frame a personal confession over obsession, and its day-to-day impacts. The track reflects a period of spiralling – drinking, identity struggles, and the overwhelming process of transition – ultimately landing on a simple but vital message: ask for help.

‘Never New’, meanwhile, followed a surprising wave of existential angst as Jocelyn was asked to be a judge on the Sound of Young Scotland. Blending humour with vulnerability and tackling dysphoria through surreal imagery, “I compare myself to Nicolas Cage and Michael Phelps,” Jocelyn laughs. “They’re like my gender dysphoria demons.” Beneath that, though, lies a deeper fear over the passage of time. “For me, as a trans person, aging means something very specific. The idea of growing into an old man is really distressing.”

The ballad ‘Look Out For Me’ is quieter, but holds the most powerful scene of the record. Written the day Jocelyn sought NHS medical advice about gender dysphoria, it captures – with faint country and post-rock stylings – a moment of unexpected compassion. “You hear so much about how transgender care is at the doctor’s discretion, and that was really scary – especially in a village, because I went to the GP back home,” she remembers. “She was just so nice and helpful and calming about it and did everything in her power to help me. Her kindness was such a big deal – it felt like she was an angel.” After she wrote the song, the miracle bestowed on Jocelyn felt political, which is the exact weight that the song carries for a listener too. It shouldn’t be a miracle but we understand why it is.

Elsewhere, Jack’s nimble songwriting adds further dimension. Reflective post-rock ballad ‘Warmface’ remembers him meeting a former walt disco bandmate who has moved into a stable, conventional life. “I felt like an idiot chasing this possibly delusional dream of music,” he admits. “Like, what am I doing?” The song imagines an alternate reality where he chose differently. The expansive indie rock of ‘New Friends’, too, captures the strange grief of a friendship ending. “You feel the ghost of that person for ages,” Jack says. “It’s different from a romantic breakup, but just as painful.” Meanwhile, ‘Total Surprise Machine’, with its thick, fuzzy distortion and lush saturation, explores feelings of learning how to love again after a more emotionally detached relationship, framing vulnerability as something mechanical, awkward, and relearned.

The album draws to a close with quiet pain at first, and then with an outpouring of grief-soaked gratitude. Standout track ‘My Body’s Still Mine’ is a statement of intent to live as best as possible, to be at peace with the past and yourself. “I want the feeling of having arrived in so many ways,” explains Jocelyn of its emotional weight. “I wanted the band to be where I want it to be, wanted to be transitioning, wanted to be more kind to the people who love me. My conclusion was that even though I don’t love my body, it serves me very well.”

Ending the album is ‘Wonderland’, a cathartic, emo-influenced piece that moves from darkness toward hope. Written during a difficult period living in band member Finlay McCarthy’s cramped flat-turned-studio, it confronts Jocelyn’s body image issues, dysphoria, and intrusive thoughts. “You can’t change the body you’re given, and that’s upsetting,” Jocelyn says. “But even if you could, you still have to fix your head.” The song edges toward something brighter, its closing refrain rejecting escapism and ultimately death: “I don’t need no wonderland.”

Reflecting on walt disco’s journey to this point, Jocelyn recalls the football team in the village she grew up in: perpetually losing, conceding goal after goal, yet always met with one relentlessly upbeat teammate insisting there was still “something to play for.” It’s a memory that feels almost absurd in hindsight, but underpins the final moments of the record: self-aware, slightly ridiculous, but completely sincere. It’s probably how you have to be to survive a music career, and life more broadly.

Ultimately, walt disco as an album has become something for the band to play for, the sound of that voice on the pitch. But they’re no longer gesturing at optimism, having created something that truly feels like them. Or as Jocelyn sings on the rousing ‘My Body’s Still Mine’: “so fae the start boys / although we’re 8 down / the cold is pinching / but I’m back in town.”

The road to Death Valley Girls’ Welcome to Earth begins in the ashes of California’s Eaton Fire.

After losing her home in Altadena and soon after her beloved dog Tommy, lead singer and songwriter Bonnie Bloomgarden confronted questions that resisted easy answers: What survives catastrophe? What remains after loss? How do you rebuild a life when the things that once defined it are gone? The album that emerged from those questions is among the most intimate and searching works Death Valley Girls have ever made.

Throughout the band's body of work, they have treated music as both celebration and search party. Albums like Glow in the Dark, Darkness Rains, Under the Spell of Joy, and Islands in the Sky transformed their space rock sound into a vehicle for spiritual inquiry, finding flashes of transcendence amid everyday chaos. But Welcome to Earth feels distinct from its predecessors. It focuses less on escaping the world and more on understanding how to remain connected after devastation.

What emerged was not a psych-punk record about loss, exactly, but about connection: the invisible threads linking people, animals, memories, landscapes, and lives across time. The album's title functions as both a greeting and a reminder, a welcome from the natural world to a species that has largely forgotten its place within it. Again and again, the songs return to the possibility that separation may be humanity's most persistent illusion.

That idea of connection extends beyond the songs themselves. After the fire, Bloomgarden found herself held aloft by the musicians who now make up Death Valley Girls: drummer Bailey Chapman, guitarist Laena Myers, bassist Alana Amram, saxophonist Sarah Safaie, and keyboardist Gregg Foreman - who devastatingly passed away not long after. They carried her through grief, through the band's first tour after the loss, and a year for her to be ready to write again. Their presence shaped not only the spirit of Welcome to Earth, but its sound: a more expansive, communal energy that feels inseparable from the people who helped bring it into being.

"I don't think this record could have been made with any other group of people," Bloomgarden shares. Tragically, the album also stands as the final Death Valley Girls recording to feature Gregg's contributions.
Yet for all its weighty questions, Welcome to Earth is remarkably joyful. "Plant Magic" turns renewal into a communal celebration. "Basic Witch," featuring Seth Bogart, transforms heartbreak into hard-won self-awareness.

What makes Welcome to Earth so moving is its refusal to separate the cosmic from the deeply personal. Bloomgarden searches for meaning everywhere, following those threads wherever they lead. The result is Death Valley Girls' most intimate album, but also their most expansive: a record that looks directly at loss and somehow emerges more open to wonder. In the end, Welcome to Earth proposes a radical idea disguised as a danceable rock-and-roll record.

It suggests that healing begins not when grief disappears, but when we recognize how deeply connected we have always been
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0839/7750/2998/files/6a7b229c4d3cb519f9d3c648_70e3bbd3-abcf-4f9a-97c5-b55969ebadaa.jpg?v=1786538646
silverwingkiller-1000-triad-funded-x-desperate-struggle
SILVERWINGKILLER - 1000% (TRIAD FUNDED X DESPERATE STRUGGLE)

Ear-gouging synth stabs. Something more raw, something more real, perhaps? For years, he had churned out one dandyish pop song after another, each more superior than the last, with almost insulting ease.
